Database Update: America's Newspapers

America’s Newspapers Database Includes
Full-Text Vincennes Sun-Commercial,
17 Indiana, 1,000 Other Papers

A new newspaper database featuring electronic editions of approximately 1,000 U.S. newspapers and including full-text articles from the Vincennes Sun-Commercial is now available for Vincennes University library patrons.

America’s Newspapers, a Newsbank, Inc., product which includes 17 Indiana newspapers, is freely available on the VU Libraries home page for on-campus users, and may be accessed off-campus by students, faculty and staff with MyVU accounts.

To search America’s Newspapers from an on-campus computer, access the VU web page at http://www.vinu.edu, click on the Academic Resources tab at the top of the page, click on VU Libraries, then Find Articles, then Newsbank, then America’s Newspapers.

The database should be useful to students, faculty, genealogists, historians, journalists and other researchers seeking to efficiently retrieve newspaper articles published from throughout the United States.

Articles from the Sun-Commercial are available starting in Sept. 2002 until the present. These include selections from local news, letters to the editor, obituaries and legal notices. Many newspapers are available from earlier periods until the current date, such as the Indianapolis Star (starting in 1999), Evansville Courier and Press (starting in 1991), and the Gary Post-Tribune (starting in 1986).

Other highlights of the newspaper resource include The New York Times (coverage starting in 2000), The Washington Post (1977-present), Chicago Tribune (1985-present), and many other full-text newspapers.

America’s Newspapers contains valuable local, regional, and national U.S. newspapers--all in one easy-to-search database. Each paper provides unique coverage of local and regional news, including companies, politics, sports, industries, cultural activities, and people in the community. Paid ads are excluded.

America’s Newspapers features an interface that allows library patrons to use a U.S. map to quickly select and search one or more local newspapers, a group of titles across a state or region, specific papers nationwide or the entire collection. Patrons can search articles by headline, name, topic, date, author and section, with the option to view results by date or relevance ranking.

Once an article has been located, it may be read, printed, or emailed. Members of the Vincennes community are welcome to use Shake Library’s computing facilities to search America’s Newspapers. A librarian is available for assistance.
